Hundreds of native wildflower plugs have been planted at Fairstead Recreation Ground by volunteers and council staff.
A wildflower meadow is taking shape at Fairstead Recreation Ground following a planting project by volunteers and council staff. Hundreds of native wildflower plugs were recently planted by members of the Nature Volunteer Network and the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk.
The project forms part of the council's Pollinator Action Plan to restore habitats for insects and wildlife across the borough. The plug planting followed the earlier spreading of green hay earlier this year, which introduced a mix of native wildflower seeds to the site.
Michael de Whalley, cabinet member for Climate Change and Biodiversity at the borough council, said: 'It is fantastic to see volunteers playing such an active role in the creation of this new wildflower meadow. Community involvement is essential if we are to reverse biodiversity decline and create spaces where nature can flourish.' Chris Walker, biodiversity officer at the borough council, added that Fairstead Rec is the ideal location for wildflower meadows and that using more than one technique allows them to introduce a wider range of species.
