Wiltshire has been crowned the UK's most haunted road capital after research analysed more than 1,100 paranormal reports.

Wiltshire has been named the most haunted road capital in the UK after research by cinch, the UK's biggest online used car retailer, analysed more than 1,100 paranormal reports from The Paranormal Database's Roads & Motorways archive. The county recorded 57 reports of paranormal activity, with sightings linked to major roads including the A4, A36, A350, A365 and A419, as well as smaller country lanes.

Reports across the UK describe sightings of ghostly figures, phantom hitchhikers, unexplained animals, and horse-drawn coaches and cars that disappeared without trace. One report from the A365 describes a horse and rider emerging from a hedge and crossing in front of a vehicle, forcing the driver to brake, before apparently disappearing into a wall. Another sighting on the A4 near Corsham involved a driver encountering a strange figure at the roadside with what appeared to be a grinning skull-like face.

Dorset came in second place with 51 reports and Essex third with 50. Across regions, the South West recorded the highest number of sightings with 151 reports, followed by the East Midlands with 109 and the North West with 88. The North East saw the fewest incidents, with just 18 reported sightings.

Ben Welham, a motoring expert at cinch, said: 'Whether you believe in ghosts or not, seeing something you can't explain while you're driving would be enough to catch anyone off guard.' He noted that some stories have been around for decades, while others have been submitted more recently, indicating they continue to capture people's imagination.
