Cumbria's education sector was celebrated at the 2026 Golden Apple Awards, which handed out 11 prizes at a ceremony in Workington.

The 2026 Golden Apple Awards ceremony took place at Energus in Workington on Thursday, October 8, bringing together Cumbria's education sector to celebrate achievement and excellence. The event was organised by Newsquest Cumbria, sponsored by the University of Cumbria, and held in partnership with The Happy Mums Foundation, a mental health support charity.

Eleven prizes were awarded across several categories, recognising teachers, pupils, schools, leaders, support staff and apprentices. BBC Radio Cumbria's Mike Zeller hosted the proceedings, describing the event as an opportunity to celebrate those who 'make a lasting difference to the lives of children and young people across our region'.

In his opening remarks, Zeller emphasised the transformative power of education. 'Education has the power to transform lives, shape futures and strengthen communities,' he said, 'and the people gathered here this evening play a vital role in making that happen.'

Newsquest Cumbria regional editor Joy Yates opened the ceremony by describing it as 'a key date in the education calendar', toasting the sector's 'talent, resilience and achievement'. She urged all nominees to be 'extremely proud' of their recognition.

The awards were also used to raise awareness and funds for The Happy Mums Foundation. Guests were encouraged to donate to the charity by scanning QR codes on their menus, as the organisation has faced the risk of closure due to lack of funding. Newsquest has been supporting the foundation over the preceding six weeks.
