North Yorkshire vineyards are taking on apprentices as the region's wine industry expands and struggles to find qualified staff.

North Yorkshire's wine industry is expanding and creating apprenticeship opportunities to address a shortage of skilled workers. Vineyards in the region are welcoming apprentices to support their growth, with Askham Bryan College near York now offering a Crop Technician course with a focus on vineyards and viticulture.

Goose Beck Vineyard in Bilton-in-Ainsty, west of York, has recently welcomed apprentice Guy Rendall, who is working towards a Level 3 qualification as a crop technician specialising in viticulture. Under the Government apprenticeship scheme, Rendall works full time at the vineyard while attending college for structured learning. He will work on all aspects of viticulture including pruning, vine management and harvesting.

Paul Chasney, director and co-founder of Goose Beck Vineyard, said the business has grown in size over recent years and become in need of more assistance. He noted that Yorkshire is developing as a place to grow grapes and make high-quality artisan wines but that it is difficult to find appropriately qualified staff in the North. Rendall said he has been interested in vineyards since childhood and praised the support from Askham Bryan College.
