York Business Festival covers public sector selling and financial prudence

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 12 Oct, 13:01 · Archive

York Business Festival launches on Wednesday with sessions on selling to the public sector and financial resilience.

York Business Festival opens on Wednesday with a 'Meet the Buyers' event hosted by Beth Wallace of Wallace Consulting. The session aims to help businesses understand how to sell to public sector organisations. Panellists include Chloe Wilcox, head of procurement at City of York Council, and Paul Revell, head of commercial strategy at York St John University.

Paul Revell explained that good procurement extends beyond price. 'Our tenders might only weight price with 40 per cent of the scoring, so most of the assessment criteria is nothing to do with price,' he said. He advised potential suppliers to 'engage early, understand the organisation's priorities, and be clear and evidenced in what you can deliver'. He stressed that sustainability and ethical business practices now form an important part of how public sector organisations assess value and manage risk.

Mr Revell noted that suppliers need not be perfect. 'Suppliers do not need to be perfect, but they do need to show commitment, transparency and a credible plan for future improvements. We are more interested in genuine progress and measurable action than inflated, polished statements,' he said. The festival will also feature Brad Heywood of Clive Owen LLP discussing financial resilience for businesses.
