Yorkshire poultry firm invests £2.5m in emissions-cutting refrigeration

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 13 Oct, 06:03 · Archive

Soanes Poultry has invested £2.5 million in a new industrial refrigeration system to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 492 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Soanes Poultry, based in Middleton on the Wolds, has invested £2.5 million in a new industrial refrigeration plant commissioned from London firm Zudek International. The system eliminates F-gases and is designed to improve energy efficiency and recover heat that would otherwise be wasted.

Ben Lee, managing director of Soanes Poultry, said the integrated refrigeration and heat-pump system will reduce the firm's annual carbon emissions by approximately 492 tonnes of CO2 and cut its reliance on fossil-fuel heating by 95 per cent. He added that the investment reflects the firm's commitment to sustainable chicken production, which also includes a 1,648 module solar array to power the factory, biomass boilers to heat the chicken sheds and wind turbines on farms.

Ivan Zudek, managing director of Zudek International, said the new project provides a coordinated, site-wide refrigeration solution rather than relying on numerous independent systems developed as the facility expanded over the years. Soanes Poultry has been rearing and preparing chicken since 1947 and supplies butchers and independent retailers across Yorkshire, as well as wholesalers nationwide.
