Jack Dean, known as JaackMaate, will switch on Norwich's Christmas lights on 19 November with his Happy Hour podcast co-hosts.
Jack Dean, known online as JaackMaate, will switch on Norwich's Christmas lights on Thursday, 19 November outside City Hall alongside Happy Hour podcast co-hosts Stevie White and Robbie Knox. The announcement came after the trio mentioned on their podcast that switching on the city's festive lights was on their bucket list. Norwich City Council revealed the news on Friday.
The Happy Hour podcast has more than one million subscribers and has featured high-profile guests including Ricky Gervais, Romesh Ranganathan and Richard Osman. Dean, 33, and White, 33, met when they were pupils at Dowson First School in Mile Cross. Knox, 49, is originally from Kent but studied at the University of East Anglia and fell in love with the city.
Lord Mayor of Norwich Karen Davies surprised the trio in their studio with a formal invitation. Dean said: "What a privilege it is to have been asked to switch on this year's Christmas lights, in our very own home city of Norwich. As a trio, we have been lucky enough to have done some mad stuff in our careers… but this is right up there." White added: "I never thought it was going to happen, but I have no complaints and I'm so excited for the day."
However, dozens of people voiced frustrations at the news online. Dean responded with a video on Facebook, joking about the backlash. He said: "I am absolutely buzzing, and so are the over-60s in the comment section of my local newspaper. They can barely contain their excitement." He then laughed at comments including "This is just sad and pathetic", "how uninteresting", and "a YouTuber? What's one of them?" He defended the podcast, saying how much they love Norwich.
