Norwich City Council has cancelled YouTuber JaackMaate's invitation to switch on the city's Christmas lights after discovering issues with his past content.
YouTuber Jack Dean, known as JaackMaate to his 1.3 million followers, was invited to switch on Norwich's Christmas lights outside City Hall on Thursday, 19 November, alongside his Happy Hour podcast co-hosts Stevie White and Robbie Knox. The Lord Mayor Karen Davies presented the invitation two weeks ago.
Norwich City Council reversed the decision on Friday, announcing that JaackMaate would no longer appear at the event. In a statement, the council said it had reviewed its arrangements and found issues from his previous published content that it should have identified before announcing him. The council did not specify what the problematic content was, when it was posted or how the issues came to light, though it acknowledged his past posts have previously drawn attention.
The council apologised for the oversight and said it would be changing its procedures. No replacement has yet been found, leaving Norwich without a headline personality to switch on the lights three weeks before the event.
