The YWCA of Charleston held its ninth annual Honk and Wave event to raise awareness of domestic violence and show support for survivors. People wore purple in honour of Domestic Violence Awareness Month and gathered along Kanawha Boulevard with signs encouraging drivers to honk in solidarity with survivors.

Julie Britton, executive director of the YWCA's Resolve Family Abuse Program, said events like these show survivors they are not alone. 'People feel like this is something that only happens to them behind closed doors, and a lot of times it does. But it happens to the entire community behind closed doors,' Britton said. 'We are here and we care. The community cares.'

During the event, the YWCA recognised Lloyd Hill as advocate of the year and Trinity's Table as volunteer of the year. Britton said advocates and volunteers often show up for survivors every day without recognition. YWCA interim CEO Kelli Batch said the event makes a difference for survivors of domestic violence, noting that many feel unheard.
