Alaska Democratic candidate Peltola injured in car crash

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 25 Oct, 19:19 · Archive

Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mary Peltola and her family suffered minor injuries on Saturday in a car crash while driving to a campaign stop at the Alaska Federation of Natives Annual Banquet. Another vehicle crashed into the one transporting Peltola and her family. Peltola required medical attention following the accident.

Peltola, an Alaska Native and former congresswoman, is challenging Republican Senator Dan Sullivan in what has become one of the most watched races in the nation. Both candidates have sought support from Alaska Native voters, a key constituency. On Friday, President Donald Trump, who held a rally for Sullivan earlier this month, said he told his administration to sue to block certification of the race if the incumbent loses. The lawsuit concerns potential confusion with another candidate listed on the ranked choice ballot as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr.

Peltola's campaign manager, Cheryl Bruce, said the candidate was in 'good spirits' following the accident, but her medical providers recommended she reschedule events on Sunday and Monday to recover. The crash delayed the 'Alaska Always Tour', an eight-stop campaign push through the final week before Election Day. Her campaign said she will resume events on Tuesday with a stop in Homer, Alaska.
