J.J. McCarthy threw 252 yards in his first start for the New York Giants, leading them to a 27-21 overtime victory over the Texans.

J.J. McCarthy won his first start as quarterback for the New York Giants on Sunday, leading them to a 27-21 overtime victory over the Houston Texans. McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards without turning the ball over, a marked improvement from his time with the Vikings, where he struggled after being the 10th-overall draft pick in 2024.

The Giants are now 4-2-1 and remain atop a weak NFC East division. Their victory came after starter Jaxson Dart underwent knee surgery for multiple tears, prompting the Giants to trade for McCarthy from the Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick. The 23-year-old had been drafted by Minnesota but fell out of favour during a rough rookie season, throwing 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The Giants scored four rushing touchdowns, with running back Devin Singletary scoring the game-winning touchdown in overtime. McCarthy's wife Katya posted on Instagram after the victory: 'God, I love you. So deserving.' After the game, McCarthy told reporters: 'Don't ask why; ask what's next.' The Giants face division rivals Philadelphia on 8 November after their bye week.
