Independent bookshop opens in Harrogate to champion indie authors

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 5 Nov, 07:32 · Archive

The Real Indie Bookshop is opening in Harrogate on 12 November, founded by award-winning children's author Christina Gabbitas.

A new independent bookshop championing indie publishing is opening in Harrogate on Thursday, 12 November. Named The Real Indie Bookshop, it will be founded by award-winning children's author Christina Gabbitas, also from Harrogate. The shop will stock the latest titles across all genres while providing a platform for independently published authors and small presses.

The shop will run a Pay it Forward scheme, inviting customers and local businesses to buy books or gift vouchers for children and young people who might otherwise be unable to afford them. Ms Gabbitas said the scheme is about more than donation. 'That freedom to choose matters,' she said. 'The aim is to help young people discover reading on their own terms, developing on their interests and experiencing the excitement of finding a story that speaks to them.'

Ms Gabbitas said: 'A family's financial circumstances should never determine whether a young person gets to experience the magic of choosing and owning a book.' The Real Indie Bookshop will open at 8am, with coffee available throughout the day and celebrations continuing into the evening.
