DNA reveals Iranian ancestry of California beach death victim

DNA analysis of a man who died in a 2020 California beach bonfire points to Iranian ancestry and possible Zoroastrian connections.

Charred remains discovered in a bonfire at Pescadero State Beach, south of San Francisco, on 24 July 2020 belonged to a man aged between 30 and 65, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office believes. The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office suspects he built the fire and died by self-immolation. The remains were so badly burned that conventional forensic examination revealed few clues to his identity.

DNA analysis by Wolf Pack DNA has now pointed to Iranian ancestry, with possible connections to eastern Mediterranean populations or the Zoroastrian community in Tehran. Zoroastrianism is one of the world's oldest surviving religions, originating in ancient Iran long before Christianity and now practised by relatively small communities. Investigators have not established that the man was Zoroastrian, or that any religious beliefs played a role in his death.

Genetic genealogy works by comparing DNA from unidentified remains with profiles voluntarily uploaded to genealogy databases, which can help identify relatives and build family trees. In this case, however, the available genetic matches have yet to produce a definitive identification, more than six years after his remains were discovered.
