Two more sentenced for New Year's Day Oxford attack

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 1 Nov, 06:20 · Archive

Two men have been sentenced for attacking Wesley Rangel Da Silva outside an Oxford kebab shop on New Year's Day.

Orgito Shahini and Oltian Ndreu have been sentenced for their part in an attack on Wesley Rangel Da Silva outside Cafe Baba and Bodrum on Cowley Road, Oxford on New Year's Day. They are the third and fourth people to be prosecuted for the assault. Shahini, 20, of Headington, was convicted at trial of causing grievous bodily harm without intent. Ndreu, 25, of Cowley, pleaded guilty to the same offence.

At the sentencing hearing on 30 October, Judge Maria Lamb described the attack as 'despicable'. She noted that both men kicked the victim while he lay on the ground and that the assault was not spontaneous but 'aggravated by drink'. Shahini was so intoxicated he could not remember the incident.

Shahini received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months, a 12-month probation requirement, a ban on drinking alcohol for 120 days, and must complete 150 hours of unpaid work. Ndreu was given an eight-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months. Both men, who had no previous convictions, submitted letters of apology to the victim.

Two men were previously sentenced for the same attack: Arber Spata received three and a half years in prison and Arger Poleshi received nine months.
