CRKD Nitro Deck 2 offers Switch 2 controller with ergonomic drawbacks

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 25 Oct, 17:19 · Archive

The CRKD Nitro Deck 2 is a multiplatform handheld controller for the Switch and Switch 2 with Hall effect-style sticks and a vice-grip clamp design.

The CRKD Nitro Deck 2 is designed for both the original Nintendo Switch and the larger Switch 2, offering a multiplatform solution that combines controller functionality, backplate protection and a kickstand in one unit. It attaches via a vice-grip clamp mechanism on the back that twists to grip the console securely.

Both reviewers noted the controller features improved joysticks over Nintendo's standard Joy-Con. TechRadar praised the overall design as ergonomic and functional, with clear customisation options through CRKD's mobile app, which allows input remapping and a 'No Deadzone' mode for the joysticks. The Verge confirmed the sticks offer better durability than Nintendo's offerings, continuing the tradition set by the original Nitro Deck.

The Verge raised significant concerns about the button layout. The reviewer found the right stick positioned too close to the ABXY face buttons, making it difficult to press them comfortably without adjusting thumb position. This represented a step down from the original Nitro Deck's superior slide-in design, sacrificed for compatibility with both Switch models. The Verge suggested the buttons and stick are 'just a few millimeters off' from a better arrangement.
