However, Labour Councillor Lewis Young noted that most upheld complaints resulted from service areas failing to respond within required timeframes rather than actual service failures, branding this a 'fairly stupid reason' for complaints to be upheld. Response times vary sharply between departments: environmental services responded on time 82 per cent of the time, while education and children's services managed only 28.8 per cent, which Young described as 'appalling'.

He highlighted that one recent permit charge was only £150, saying the figure appeared to be a typo given that utility companies are multi-million pound operations. Cllr Nightingale cited the social costs of disruption to traffic, damage to roads and footpaths, and mess left after works are completed. However, the cabinet member for highways and transport, Councillor Carl Quartermain, said the council has no scope to make additional charges, as permit fees are set by the Department of Transport within a statutory framework.

The Muslim Federation of Cleveland has applied to build a new Abu Bakr Mosque and Cultural Centre on vacant land on Park Road North in Middlesbrough, where the organisation previously worshipped before the building was demolished. The mosque will be entirely privately funded. The proposal follows more than a decade of consultation and two earlier planning applications, one approved in 2012 and one refused in 2023. Seven firearms and live ammunition were stolen after thieves broke into a locked gun safe at a home in Pateley Moor Crescent, Darlington, at around 4am on 3 November. Five shotguns and two bolt-action rifles were taken. A silver Nissan Navara was also stolen but later recovered. Police said the guns were lawfully held and licensed. Detective Inspector Clare Lambert said enquiries are ongoing and officers are pursuing leads to apprehend those responsible and recover the stolen items. Police are concerned about the potential risks if the firearms fall into the wrong hands and are appealing for information.
