Shouts were heard on the Corridor Route up Scafell Pike on 4 November, prompting Cumbria Police to contact Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team at 12.08pm. The team was not deployed due to limited information and no further public reports, but two team members were involved in the alert for six hours and eight minutes. The incident was closed at 6.16pm.

A 26-year-old hiker was rescued by Keswick mountain rescue on 4 November after becoming stranded in darkness on the Coast-to-Coast path above Lining Crag. Without an adequate torch, he found himself unable to continue by 6.18pm. Three team members escorted him safely down to Stonethwaite.

Cumberland Council is hosting a free morning conference at Keswick Pencil Factory on Thursday 12 November to explore opportunities for Cumbrian businesses and community groups from the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ. The event will feature speakers including council leader Mark Fryer, broadcaster Mark McAlindon, and representatives from the Grand Départ GB project. Attendees will hear practical advice on how organisations can engage with and benefit from the event, along with networking sessions and a panel discussion. The 2027 Grand Départ begins in Edinburgh on 2 July, with the opening stage finishing in Carlisle. Stage two starts in Keswick on 3 July and travels through the Lake District and Lancashire to Liverpool. Cumberland will host two stages of the race.

Benjamin Athersmith assaulted a hotel manager at the Holiday Inn in Barrow town centre on 10 September and damaged property before being arrested. The 34-year-old was placed in a police van where he spat on the floor three times, then threw food against his cell wall in custody. South Cumbria Magistrates' Court heard it cost Cumbria Constabulary £174 to clean both the van and cell. Athersmith pleaded guilty to common assault, two counts of criminal damage and using threatening words or behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress. His solicitor said he had struggled with alcohol previously and had drunk more than intended on the evening; his alcohol tag had just been removed and the date coincided with his grandmother's death anniversary.

Rail operators are urging passengers to plan ahead as Manchester's Christmas markets return, warning of significantly higher demand on train services. Manchester Piccadilly station saw more than 382,000 passengers during the opening weekend of the 2025 markets, an 11 per cent increase on 2024. Network Rail, Northern, and TransPennine Express have warned that trains and platforms across Manchester's city centre stations will be much busier than usual, and queuing systems may be introduced at Manchester Piccadilly to manage crowds safely.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has endorsed Labour candidate David Allen, the Police Fire and Crime Commissioner, ahead of Cumbria's mayoral election next year. In an op-ed for the News & Star, Burnham praised Allen's work, citing his initiative giving young mechanics students at Carlisle College access to vehicles seized from criminals. Victoria Edgecombe, 41, was arrested in Barrow after Co-op staff alerted police on 9 September. She had purchased a bottle of wine and returned to her Vauxhall Corsa with the keys in the ignition. She recorded 175 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, nearly five times the 35 microgram legal limit. Edgecombe pleaded guilty to being drunk whilst in charge of a motor vehicle. Magistrates banned her from driving for 12 months and ordered an 80-day alcohol abstinence monitoring requirement.

A vehicle fire has closed the A591 in both directions at Plantation Bridge. Police and Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene after being called at around 3.42pm. The vehicle involved is believed to be a van. Motorists have been advised to avoid the area while the scene is cleared and recovery work is carried out, with traffic being diverted.

Whitehaven's West Pier has reopened after weeks of repairs to an electrical cable fault that closed it in September. Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners said the pier is now accessible to the public following successful repairs. Engineers lifted and reinstated the concrete-encased cable, which has been reconnected and re-energised. Visitors are advised to take care as loose concrete remains in places and contractors continue work.

Four youths caused more than £500 of criminal damage to a council bin in the Lyth Valley, South Cumbria, using fireworks at around 11:15pm on 25 October. The incident was recorded on CCTV and reported to Cumbria Police, who are investigating for criminal damage. Westmorland and Furness Council said the act risked serious injury and posed a danger to the surrounding environment.

Manchester Airport has unveiled plans for a multimillion-pound transformation of Terminal 3, its oldest terminal. The project will expand the departure lounge by more than a third, adding around 2,000 square metres of floorspace, with more seating, natural light and space for new shops, bars and restaurants. Work is expected to be completed in 2028.

The Arch Company is investing £1.6m to transform 12 railway arches in Carlisle that have stood vacant since Storm Desmond in 2015. Located on Viaduct Estate Road near Carlisle railway station, the arches will be upgraded with new glazing, roller shutters, improved power supplies and facilities. The BBC reports construction is expected to be completed and units ready to lease in 2027.

The Labour Government's £50 million VALOUR programme will establish seven veteran support centres across Cumbria, with hubs in Penrith, Carlisle, Whitehaven, Workington, Barrow, Kendal, and Grange. The programme will expand the national network of veterans' organisations from 14 to 34. The centres will offer support for veterans and their families in healthcare, housing, employment, benefits, and wellbeing.

Alan Crone, 62, from Selside near Kendal, was stopped by police on Sandes Avenue on 10 September and returned a positive breathalyser test. He was taken to Kendal police station where further breath tests showed a lowest reading of 91 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, compared with the legal limit of 35 micrograms. Crone pleaded guilty and told magistrates he was 'very sorry', accepting responsibility for his actions. He was fined £329 and banned from driving for 23 months, though he can reduce the ban by 23 weeks by completing a drink drivers rehabilitation course. Court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £88 were also imposed.

Cumberland Council has warned residents against building unauthorised bonfires using dumped waste this Bonfire Night. Using unwanted furniture, wood, or household items on open land can be classed as fly-tipping and may lead to enforcement action, including a Fixed Penalty Notice. The council urges residents to take household waste to a household waste recycling centre or arrange a bulky waste collection instead.

Parts of Cumbria could see snow next week as temperatures are forecast to plunge to around minus 5C. The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model predicts temperatures could fall to minus 5.5C in Carlisle at 6am on Friday, 13 November, with Barrow-in-Furness around minus 5C and the Lake District around minus 5.2C. About 0.7cm of snowfall is predicted by 6pm that day, with approximately 0.5cm potentially lying on the ground, particularly on higher ground in the Lake District and North Pennines. However, forecasts more than a week in advance remain uncertain and subject to change. The Met Office's current forecasts are considerably milder, predicting overnight temperatures of around 4 to 5C on 13 November, and its longer-range outlook suggests temperatures will initially be 'a little below average' before returning to near or slightly above average.

The Department for Transport has confirmed that UK Blue Badges are now recognised in Italy. However, disabled drivers have been warned that recognition does not mean the same parking and driving concessions apply as in Britain. Italy has regional restrictions and traffic rules that vary, particularly in historic city centres where drivers may need to register their number plate with local authorities or face fines of between €84 and €335.

Over 112,000 people have signed a petition calling for the state pension age to be lowered to 65. Created by Michelle Gill, the campaign argues the cut could allow people to retire with dignity and free up jobs for younger workers. The Government has rejected the proposal, citing rising life expectancy and an ageing population.

Barrie Blenkinship, 88, from Penrith, has entered not guilty pleas to three historic child sex allegations at Carlisle Crown Court. His trial is set to begin on 4 October 2027. He has been granted conditional bail with restrictions preventing him from contacting the alleged victim and from having unsupervised contact with any child under 18.

Brandon Jack Watson, 26, from Carlisle, denies multiple allegations of harassment inspired by hostility towards migrants. The charges include distributing threatening and abusive videos intended to stir up racial hatred. His four-day trial is scheduled to begin on 11 January at Carlisle Crown Court, with Judge Nicholas Barker ruling that Watson will remain in custody until a further hearing on 9 November.

Workington magistrates' court took guilty pleas from six motorists on November 2 after they admitted serious driving offences. The cases included drink driving, drug driving, driving while disqualified, driving while uninsured, and failing to stop after an accident. Penalties included driving bans of up to 22 months and fines ranging from £461 to £1,520.
