The Government has introduced a Visitor Levy Bill to parliament, giving metro mayors the power to impose a tax on hotel stays for transport and tourism improvements. West of England metro mayor Helen Godwin supports the plan. However, council leaders in Bath & North East Somerset and North Somerset have expressed concerns about the impact on their tourism industries, and it remains unclear how conflicts between metro mayors and local councils will be resolved.

Dr Eliza Walker Dunbar, born in 1845 and one of the first seven women to complete a medical degree at the University of Zürich, has been honoured with a blue plaque in Berkeley Square, Bristol. After moving to the city in 1873, she became a house surgeon at Bristol's Children's Hospital but was forced to resign when male doctors protested. She subsequently established a private practice and opened the Bristol Private Hospital for Women and Children in Berkeley Square in 1895, remaining senior surgeon there until her death in 1925.

Derek Barker, 92, denies eight sexual offences against four boys at Monkton Combe School in Bath during the 1970s and 1980s. One complainant told Bristol Crown Court that Barker allegedly arranged for him to visit the teacher's flat where an older pupil raped him whilst Barker watched. The complainant said Barker 'orchestrated' the incident by creating the circumstances but did not physically abuse him. Barker's defence denies he was present or involved in organising the alleged abuse.

BristolLive reports that Mustafa Ali, 19, denies murdering Leon Phillips, 47, who was stabbed to death outside Malik Supermarket on Stapleton Road in Easton on 2 February. Ali's defence barrister told Bristol Crown Court that Ali acted in self-defence, believing Phillips was carrying a knife and had no option but to defend himself. Phillips died in hospital after suffering three wounds.

Bristol City goalkeeper Joe Duncan, who is on a season-long loan at National League club Southend, has been named in the Wales squad for upcoming Nations League games. The 20-year-old replaces Everton's Tom King and qualifies for Wales through his maternal grandfather from Cardiff. Duncan has previously represented Wales Under-21s and the Jamaica Under-23 side.

A Citroen C4 crashed into a property on Morris Road in Lockleaze, Bristol, just before 3.25am on Wednesday. A man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drink or drugs. While emergency services were dealing with the incident, a Volkswagen Golf was driven towards the scene, injuring a police officer who was trying to stop it. The Golf collided with police vehicles and a fire engine. Two men in their late teens and twenties were arrested in connection with dangerous driving and possession with intent to supply cocaine. The property occupants were uninjured, and no police officers required hospital treatment.

Alex Weaver has been appointed as Academy Manager at Bristol Rovers Football Club. Weaver has previously worked as head coach at Singapore Premier League clubs Hougang United and Warriors FC, winning the SPL with the latter, before holding several roles in Switzerland including positions at FC Basel and as Assistant Head Coach at Yverdon Sport.

Helen Godwin, the West of England mayor, has indicated she is open to franchising buses back into public ownership but will not proceed without full financial information. She hopes to have the necessary data within six months. Godwin is currently in the final stages of negotiating an Enhanced Partnership Plus with bus companies, which will create a new oversight board and give the mayor access to bus network data.

Doctors using an AI note-taking tool called Heidi were able to maintain eye contact and listen better to patients, according to a trial of 55 GP surgeries in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Of 109 GPs surveyed after the 18-month trial, 74 per cent reported a positive impact on their interactions with patients. Around 44 per cent felt less overwhelmed at work, and four in five said they would continue using it.
