A man jumped from the first floor of a takeaway restaurant on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park shortly before 4pm on Bonfire Night (5 November) to escape a fire. Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters attended the blaze, which affected the ground, first and second floors of the building and damaged a flat above and the roof. The man was treated for minor injuries and taken to hospital. Around eight others were evacuated. The cause is under investigation.

PC Omer Farok was sacked following a misconduct hearing that found gross misconduct over his treatment of a vulnerable man in central London in June 2024. Farok handcuffed the man after officers responded to reports of someone entering an unattended vehicle, then repeatedly pushed him into a brick wall, called him an 'idiot' and manipulated his handcuffs to cause pain. Because the man was handcuffed behind his back, he could not break his fall when Farok shoved him to the ground, and he landed face-first on the pavement, suffering a laceration near his right eyebrow that required hospital treatment. Farok was cleared of assault by beating in a criminal trial in November 2025, but the misconduct panel found he breached police standards on use of force, authority, respect and courtesy. He will be placed on the College of Policing barred list, preventing him from working in policing in the future.

Lewisham Council has agreed to appoint a surveyor to assess damage to Rushey Green Nursery in Catford following a major fire on 31 January that destroyed nearly half the roof. The council expects to recover costs through insurance. Deputy Mayor Rudi Schmidt said the council needed to move quickly because delayed repairs meant reduced rental income.

A 14-year-old girl told a court she was sexually assaulted on a train to London on 4 February by Baryalai Rahimi, 25, and Mirebadurahman Sadat, 29. The girl said commuters 'just stared at their phones' as she was assaulted in the carriage. Both men deny all charges.

Charles Maynard, a skipper from Sevenoaks, spotted a man jump from Westminster Bridge on 18 February and alerted his colleague Ian Davis from Eltham. Davis used a boat hook to reach the man in the water whilst Maynard ran along Westminster Pier to join him. Together they pulled the man to safety, risking being swept into the Thames themselves, and kept him warm and conscious until emergency services arrived. Both men are to receive Royal Humane Society Testimonials on Parchment.

The Dog in Surrey Street, a Grade II-listed pub believed to be Croydon's oldest, has reopened following refurbishment and a change of ownership in 2025. Owner Sean Cook said the pub's main draw is a hidden garden known as The Wilderness, which surprises first-time visitors. The venue hosts football screenings, film nights and live music, and experienced a spike in custom during the World Cup after installing an outdoor screen.

Human bones have been discovered in Seven Kings Park in Ilford, east London. Police were called to the park at around 1.50pm on Tuesday 3 November following reports of the discovery. A crime scene has been established whilst specialist police and forensic officers continue their investigations.

Russell Brand, the 51-year-old comedian and conspiracy theorist, has been found guilty of rape and sexual assault. His barrister Ian Winter KC launched a verbal attack on Sunday Times journalist Rosamund Urwin outside the courtroom after the verdict, whose investigation had helped bring Brand's victims forward. The defence had argued that media coverage had 'poisoned the well', but the trial judge rejected the bid to prevent proceedings.

Flight passengers across Europe, including from Heathrow and Birmingham, have been disrupted by hoax bomb threats that the UK government has labelled malicious hoaxes. The Civil Aviation Authority said these incidents will likely be classed as an 'extraordinary circumstance', meaning passengers are unlikely to receive compensation as the threats are outside airline control. However, airlines still have a duty of care: passengers are entitled to food, drink or hotel accommodation depending on delay length, and can choose refunds or rerouting at the earliest opportunity.

Manoj Thalgaswatta, 61, is accused of sexually assaulting a girl at a shop in Erith on 10 December 2024. He was charged two days later and pleaded not guilty. His trial, originally scheduled for last week at Woolwich Crown Court, was abandoned when his defence barrister fell ill and no replacement could be found. It has been rescheduled for May 2029. The girl will be 19 by the time of trial. A relative told News Shopper the delays have caused the family significant distress and called for faster justice.

Arsenal's £4million signing Andria Bartishvili will be sidelined for up to three months after damaging ligaments in his right ankle while playing for his loan club Iberia 1999. The 17-year-old Georgian winger has a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal but cannot join until he turns 18 next summer under FIFA youth transfer rules. An Instagram statement confirmed damage to the anterior talo-fibular ligament and said Bartishvili would complete rehabilitation before the end of the season.

Victoria Mortimer from Mitcham joined campaigners at Downing Street on 2 November in support of the Recipe for Change Citizens' Charter, which calls for stronger Government action to make healthy food more affordable. Ms Mortimer is urging ministers to ban cartoon characters on packaging of unhealthy HFSS foods, describing it as targeted marketing at children. The charter also urges measures to encourage food manufacturers to reduce excessive sugar, salt and saturated fat.

Viswanth Dhara, 32, has been named as the man who died after falling from height in West Ham Lane in Stratford on 16 October. A post-mortem gave his cause of death as multiple injuries from the fall. An inquest has been opened at East London Coroner's Court and adjourned pending further investigation.

Croydon recorded 408 domestic abuse-related offences in September 2026, the highest of any London borough, according to Metropolitan Police figures. London recorded 8,167 such offences across all boroughs that month. However, Croydon did not have the highest rate per population: Barking and Dagenham, Greenwich and Tower Hamlets each recorded 1.2 offences per 1,000 people, compared to Croydon's rate of 1.0 per 1,000.

The East India Arms pub in Fenchurch Street has reopened after refurbishment and will now open on weekends for the first time in its history. The pub, dating back to 1829, has undergone a refresh including repainting, new artwork and furniture while preserving its historic character. New offerings include a cocktail menu and Shepherd Neame's latest beer, Bishops Finger IPA Reserve, claimed to be the first served on draught in the UK.
